Yuki opened her purse as she always did when the airport customs inspector asked. They did not always ask to see inside her purse when she entered the U.S., but through the years she did get asked a few times. She joked with the customs inspector about the current yen exchange which he either did not understand or did not find very funny. He kept looking at the money bills in her purse; he asked her how much was there. She answered about 3 million yen ($30,000.00). He called over one of the other customs inspectors and whispered to him while pointing to Yuki's purse. Yuki knew something was wrong but could not understand what they were saying.

After being detained for several hours at the airport she was finally allowed to leave but without her money.

Yuki sat in my office and cried as she told me her story. She would not only lose her job but also would be liable for the money if it was not returned.

I explained that U.S. immigration laws limit the amount of cash travelers can carry into the U.S. and if the amount is in excess, the customs inspector can take the money and impound it.
